Glasgow: Tenants Today Conference

September 18, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

The Tenements Today – Tenements Tomorrow conference in Glasgow on the 18th September will be a worthwhile day for all those interested in the future of this uniquely Scottish form of home ownership, providing an opportunity to hear both from established tenement experts and speakers bringing new perspectives on the issue. Delegates’ views on the reform of tenement legislation will be actively collected and put forward to politicians.

Dr Frankie McCarthy of the University of Glasgow School of Law will talk on how we balance individual and community rights in her talk on “Human rights issues in tenement law reform.”
“Applying behavioural science to improve tenement maintenance” will be the topic of Dr Conny Wollbrant’s talk and Conny, an Associate Professor in economics at the University of Stirling, will talk from his research on how to nudge people to save more towards their pensions or to pursue more environmentally sustainable behaviours.

The political perspective will be provided by Kevin Stewart, MSP, Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning and Graham Simpson MSP, Chair of the Scottish Parliamentary Working Group on Tenement Maintenance which proposed the legislative reforms which form a focus for the day.

Annie Flint (Under One Roof), Niall Murphy (Glasgow City Heritage Trust), and Prof Douglas Robertson will provide the historical housing and architectural background and review why we need further changes in legislation.
