Bridgewater Housing Association: Building Community Spirit at Robertson House: Neighbours supporting Neighbours

At Robertson House, one of our Extra Care developments in Erskine, we know that good neighbours can make all the difference. This year’s Scottish Housing Day theme, “Everyone Needs Good Neighbours”, shines a light on the importance of strong communities and neighbourly support. At Bridgewater Housing Association, this is not just a theme – it is something we see in action every day. We are proud to promote our recently constituted residents’ group at Robertson House which is a prime example of this year’s theme.

The Challenge

Many older tenants face challenges such as social isolation, loneliness, and reduced opportunities to stay connected to their community. We recognised that tenants at Robertson House wanted more than just a safe and comfortable home. They wanted a place where friendships could grow, where they could make decisions about their own activities, and where neighbours truly look out for one another. At the same time, sustainability was a challenge: to continue activities, the group needed to access funding and build confidence in managing its own affairs.

The Response

In partnership with tenants and their families, Bridgewater has supported the creation of the residents’ group at Robertson House. The formally constituted group gives tenants a collective voice. The group aims to bring people together through social activities and events to reduce isolation and help build lasting friendships. By encouraging members to take an active role in planning and decision-making, we have seen a real sense of empowerment and created a supportive and welcoming environment where everyone feels included. Our activities not only improve wellbeing and quality of life but also strengthen the sense of community, showing the real difference good neighbours can make. Tenants will not just be attending activities; they will be shaping them. To continue this work, the group applies for funding, ensuring that older tenants at Robertson House have opportunities to connect, thrive, and celebrate community spirit. As we mark Scottish Housing Day 2025, we celebrate the tenants and families at Robertson House who have shown what is possible when communities work together. Their efforts are proof that with partnership, participation, and a little neighbourly spirit, we can build stronger, more connected places to live.
